My courses at San Jose were centered in my pre-med school plan and chemistry bachelors degree major. I continued that focus for over a year at Berkeley, where in the middle of the tumultuous 1960s, I realized that I wanted to be neither a physician nor a chemist. The idea of becoming a doctor of medicine was my father and a chemist simply a useful major for that end. I pictured myself not going to medical school and working unhappily in a sterile laboratory of some chemical company. It did not take much to persuade me to seek other interests. As much in revolt of paternal pressure as an affinity acquired from my mother for the arts and literature, I shifted my focus radically to the arts and took two terms of art and art history courses at Berkeley. After the second term, I realized it was going to be a very tough go to make a living in the arts. I viewed the social sciences as the middle way between the biological and physical sciences at one end of the curricula and the arts and humanities at the other end. At San Francisco State I became a Psychology major. I excelled in these courses. I also took several courses in anthropology, sociology, and the dramatic arts before earning my Bachelors Degree in Psychology.
